It’s All About Uptime!

This was our theme for the CONEXPO/CONAGG 2014 trade show and will remain a key message for Stellar throughout 2014.  So, what does “It’s All About Uptime” mean to our customers.  Well, first, let’s recognize that it is not just a slogan or a great catch phrase.  It means something to us and to our customers.  Since our beginning, Stellar has developed product with the focus on helping customers be more productive.  I can remember when our first telescopic crane development began, we committed ourselves to changing the way operators understood telescopic service cranes.  We knew we could provide a product that would change the way people thought of mechanics service cranes.  We invested in technology like planetary winches, radio remote controls, advanced hexagonal boom designs, and two stage internal extension systems to really bring value to the end user.  Our focus was not to be the cheapest, but to be the best. We just knew that if we could fundamentally improve the productivity of our end users, that they would in turn improve the productivity of their customer.  When a mechanic using a Stellar® crane can do a job faster and more efficiently than a competitive product, we knew customers would see the value at the end of the day.  And they did!  This is why “It’s All About Uptime!”

Today, we are on the verge of another great leap in control technology.  The Stellar® CDTplus™ equipment control system will allow operators to know their ability to lift a load via an LCD screen on their handheld radio controller.  This is a huge  “Uptime” productivity improvement.  Operators will be able to place a crane hook over a load and know instantly what the capacity of the crane will be in that location.  Plus, it will be able to tell you how much further you can move that load.  We at Stellar are confident that customers will see the value in this addition to our product line, and will continue to move towards Stellar as their preferred supplier of telescopic service cranes.

Trade Show Follow-Up

You may have heard we’ve been busy with trade shows and will continue to be busy with trade shows until the end of April. We recently wrapped up two major shows, The NTEA Work Truck Show and the CONEXPO-CON/AGG show. We’ve got some great information to share from each show.

1. We held our 10th Annual Distributor Meeting at the NTEA Work Truck Show, and it was a success.   We had a great turn out even with the bad weather that was experienced in Indianapolis the first week of March.  We introduced the new 3315 and 4421 cranes to our distribution at the meeting, as well as shared information about some of our other product lines we offer.

2. CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014 was one of our most successful trades shows ever!  The new products we featured were very well received.  If the statistics from the show are any indication, the market appears to be headed in the right direction.

Why We’ve Upgraded Our ERP Business System

Successful businesses not only need to have the right product at the right place at the right time at the right price, and with the right people to deliver and support, but it also requires the right business systems and processes to support the entire effort.   Now that’s quite the sentence, and not sure how my high school English teacher would grade it, but it certainly supports the rationale of why Stellar Industries has taken on the monumental investment in both capital and people resources to upgrade our ERP business system.

We have experienced significant growth over the past ten years or so, thus we needed better systems horsepower to support us better in our effort to support the customer.  While business systems are often internally focused and have the habit of being restrictive, Stellar took the position that our new system had to conform to our customer first attitude and not force us to conform to a sub optimal process.  So, the big “Go Live” date was this past week, and while we have asked for our customer’s patience and understanding during the transition, we certainly won’t let it be an excuse to not continue our “Stellar” attitude towards our customers.


The news is full of stories of American individuals losing health insurance coverage due to their current carrier canceling their coverage. How many of you have heard of companies losing coverage for their employees? Stellar Industries, Inc. is self-insured for our health benefit plan. A critical component of any corporate self-insured plan is to work with a dependable TPA, or Third-Party Administrator, to manage claims processing, provider networks, utilization review, and membership functions. We were informed in early August that our TPA of several years was ceasing operations at the end of the 2013 calendar year. The reason given to us was that the increased reporting and paperwork requirements under the upcoming Affordable Care Act would not allow them operate in the black. Stellar Industries has since secured the services of a different, larger TPA that will begin working with us next month. Thankfully our employees that have health insurance coverage through Stellar Industries will see no gap in coverage.

While our politicians in Washington DC like to talk about all the work they do in the name of creating jobs, do we really know how many jobs they are destroying in the process?
